The latest iteration of the Ford Mustang, particularly the Dark Horse variant, will usher in a new era for the brand's motorsports division. The 2023 Ford Mustang GT "Gen3" recently made its debut at the 2023 Australian Supercars Championship, and while it hasn't been released in America, current Ford racers are already expressing interest. NASCAR driver Austin Cindric, who pilots the No. 2 NASCAR Next Gen Mustang and won the 2022 Daytona 500, has not had the chance to drive the Ford Mustang GT3 yet, but he is eager to do so, according to a recent report by NBC Sports.
During a press conference, Cindric expressed his excitement for the Mustang GT3 and mentioned that he has watched Ford's introductory video about the car countless times. He believes the car is well-suited to his experience level and his relationships within the industry. Cindric is the only fulltime Cup Series racer to have participated in the 24 Hours of Daytona in recent years. In 2024, Ford plans to compete in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship's GTD Pro class with the Mustang GT3, while customer cars will be available for the GT Daytona division. The Mustang GT3 could make endurance racing more attractive to NASCAR drivers, as IMSA racing has recently drawn in several drivers from the stock car series.
Cindric suggested that the Mustang GT3 could potentially influence NASCAR drivers' interest in participating in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona due to its manufacturer ties. However, he acknowledged that the logistics and challenge of securing a ride for the race would remain difficult, based on his own experiences, despite the connection to the GT3 Mustang.
