The AM radio will not be available in the 2024 Mustang.

According to a source on Mustang 7G and a statement from a Ford representative to The Drive, the 2024 Ford Mustang will not have an AM radio. This follows the F-150 Lighting in removing the AM radio option, which is often eliminated in electric vehicles due to interference from the car's electromagnetic fields. However, Ford cites a "modernizing" effort focused on streaming, FM, and digital media as the reason for dropping AM. This move is worrisome for AM radio stations and officials, as AM stations have a wider reach and lower operating costs than FM stations. AM radio is also crucial for niche interest and reliable communication in remote areas during emergencies. Although 47 million Americans listen to AM radio, they only represent 20% of American radio listeners and tend to be older. Ford may have decided to exclude AM radio from the new Mustang generation to save costs and weight, and because they believe the car's target market is unlikely to use it. However, the car will still come equipped with a radio, unlike Aston Martin's Valkyrie hypercar.

While the removal of AM radio may not be a significant issue for the Mustang's target market, it could still have consequences for Ford. Automakers have faced criticism for removing features that are important to certain groups, such as manual transmissions or spare tires. In this case, it could be argued that removing AM radio is not just an inconvenience for some drivers but a loss of an important communication tool for emergency situations.

On the other hand, the move to focus on streaming and digital media aligns with the increasing trend towards connected cars and smart features. Many drivers now rely on streaming services such as Spotify or Apple Music for their music and podcasts, and the ability to access these services directly from their cars can be a significant selling point. Additionally, the rise of voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa means that drivers can interact with their cars in more natural and intuitive ways.

Overall, the removal of AM radio from the Mustang is a reflection of the changing landscape of in-car entertainment and communication. While some may lament the loss of an old-fashioned technology, others will appreciate the convenience and modernity of the new features. As with any innovation, there will be winners and losers, but the industry as a whole is moving towards a more connected and integrated future.
