The Ford Mustang Mach-E has received high marks in various safety tests due to its unique crash structure, earning five stars in side impact and rollover crash tests from the NHTSA, achieving excellent ratings in Euro NCAP and Green NCAP evaluations, and receiving praise from the IIHS for its AEB system's performance in low-light conditions. However, the IIHS recently updated its moderate front overlap crash test, and very few crossover vehicles have been able to achieve a "good" rating in this category. The short list of vehicles that have received a "good" rating includes the 2023 Ford Escape, the 2022-2023 Ford Explorer, and now, the 2021-2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E.
Out of a group of 13 mid-size crossovers tested, only four achieved an excellent rating, including the Ford Explorer and Mustang Mach-E. The Blue Oval credits the use of seat belts with pretensioner and load limiting technology in both the first and second rows as contributing to their success. Furthermore, the Mach-E performed exceptionally well among mid-size electric vehicle crossovers in this round of testing.
The IIHS 2.0 moderate front overlap crash test now assesses the impact on rear-seat occupants in addition to front passengers, and most of the mid-size crossovers tested did not meet the new standards. Of the models tested, three - the Chevrolet Traverse, Toyota Highlander, and Volkswagen Atlas - received marginal ratings, while the remaining six - the Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, Mazda CX-9, and Nissan Murano - received poor ratings.
In order to receive a "good" rating in the IIHS crash test, the sensors in the second-row dummy must not record measurements that indicate a high risk of injury to the head, neck, chest, abdomen, or thigh. Additionally, a pressure sensor monitors the position of the shoulder belt on the dummy's torso to assess the risk of chest injuries.
Jim Baumbick, the Vice President of Ford Product Development and Quality, stated that safety and quality are top priorities for the company. The IIHS recognition of the Mustang Mach-E and Explorer's performance in the crash test validates the company's focus on these areas and its commitment to improving its customers' lives.
