2013 Ford Mustang Debuts at Los Angeles Auto Show With New Styling and Performance Upgrades

Ford continues to evolve its legendary Mustang with a refreshed 2013 model that debuted at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. While an all-new generation was already on the horizon for the Mustang’s upcoming 50th anniversary, Ford proved there was still plenty of life left in the current platform with a wide range of styling, technology, and performance enhancements.

According to Mustang chief engineer Dave Pericak, the goal for the 2013 update was to refine and improve an already successful formula. The latest Mustang builds on the strengths of both the V6 and 5.0-liter GT models while adding more premium features and driver-focused technology.

Visually, the 2013 Mustang adopts a more aggressive appearance with a larger grille, revised front splitter, and body-colored rocker panels. At the rear, a new gloss-black trim panel connects the taillights, which now feature smoked lenses and updated LED lighting elements.

Both V6 and GT models now come standard with HID headlights, while additional LED accents appear front and rear. Wheel sizes range from 17 inches on base models up to 19 inches on performance-oriented trims and packages.

One of the more unique additions is a new pony projection light integrated into the side mirrors. When the car is unlocked, the iconic Mustang logo is projected onto the ground beside the vehicle. Ford also introduced two striking new exterior colors for 2013: Deep Impact Blue and Gotta Have It Green.

Inside the cabin, buyers can now option Recaro sport seats previously reserved for high-performance Mustang variants like the Boss 302 and Shelby GT500. A new 4.2-inch LCD display in the instrument cluster adds extra functionality, including Ford’s new Track Apps feature. This built-in performance system can record acceleration times, braking performance, g-forces, and quarter-mile statistics directly from the factory.

Under the hood, the base Mustang continues with its 3.7-liter V6 producing 305 horsepower, while the Mustang GT receives a power increase, with the 5.0-liter V8 now generating 420 horsepower.

Ford also upgraded the driving experience across the lineup. Automatic models now feature SelectShift manual gear control, while manual-transmission Mustangs gain hill start assist technology to help prevent rollback on inclines.

For enthusiasts seeking even more performance, Ford introduced a new GT Track Package for manual-equipped GT models with a 3.73 rear axle ratio. The package includes an engine oil cooler, upgraded radiator, high-performance brake pads, and the same Torsen limited-slip differential found in the Boss 302. It also incorporates the Brembo Brake Package with massive 14-inch front brake rotors, unique 19-inch wheels, and summer performance tires.

With sharper styling, more power, and expanded performance technology, the 2013 Mustang demonstrates Ford’s continued commitment to keeping its iconic pony car highly competitive in the modern muscle car segment.
