LOS ANGELES, Nov. 15, 2011 — The Ford Mustang, a true icon of American performance and style, returns for 2013 with a sharper design and a host of new features that bring added technology and refinement to the beloved pony car.
“The new Mustang builds on an already strong foundation,” said Dave Pericak, Mustang chief engineer. “We’ve taken the proven performance of the 5.0-liter and V6 engines and elevated the overall driving experience with more features and improved refinement.”
A More Aggressive Look
Set to go on sale in spring 2012, the updated Mustang features a more assertive design, highlighted by a larger, more prominent grille and a stronger front splitter. GT models benefit from functional hood heat extractors designed to improve engine cooling by channeling hot air out of the engine bay.
“Our goal was to create a more emotional and distinctive design that reflects Mustang’s total performance,” added chief designer Darrell Behmer. “It respects its heritage while moving forward with a more modern and powerful appearance.”
Body-colored rocker panels replace the previous darker trim, giving the car a more premium finish. At the rear, a high-gloss black panel connects the taillights, which retain Mustang’s signature sequential turn signals while adopting a darker, more purposeful look.
Lighting, Wheels, and Styling Updates
For 2013, both V6 and GT models now come standard with HID headlights, accented by LED signature lighting. Two LED bars highlight the front headlights, while three LED elements form the iconic rear light design.
The Mustang also introduces an updated wheel lineup, ranging from 17-inch standard wheels on the V6 to optional 19-inch designs on GT and V6 Performance Package models. New finishes and styles enhance the car’s bold stance.
Additional exterior highlights include side mirrors with a projection feature that casts the Mustang pony logo onto the ground when the car is unlocked, along with new paint options such as Deep Impact Blue and Gotta Have It Green.
Interior and Technology Enhancements
Inside, both V6 and GT models offer optional Recaro sport seats in leather or cloth, designed to provide superior support during spirited driving and track use. These seats feature enhanced bolstering and integrated headrests, with provisions for racing harness setups.
A new 4.2-inch LCD display in the instrument cluster gives drivers access to vehicle data, including fuel economy and performance metrics. Integrated Track Apps allow drivers to measure acceleration times, quarter-mile runs, braking performance, and g-forces, complete with automatic and countdown timing features.
Performance and Driving Dynamics
The 5.0-liter V8 engine in the Mustang GT now delivers 420 horsepower, benefiting from improvements derived from the development of the Boss 302. Drivers can also opt for a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, which offers both fully automatic and manual control without forced upshifts.
For those seeking enhanced track performance, the new GT Track Package is available on manual GT models equipped with a 3.73 rear axle. It includes an engine oil cooler, upgraded radiator, high-performance brake pads, a Torsen limited-slip differential, and the Brembo brake package with 14-inch front rotors and 19-inch wheels wrapped in performance tires.
Additional updates include the availability of the Brembo Brake Package on automatic GT models and expanded availability of the V6 Performance Package for automatic variants.
Convenience and Audio Upgrades
New features such as hill-start assist help prevent rollback on inclines, improving everyday usability. The 2013 Mustang also introduces upgraded audio systems, including the Shaker system with 370 watts and eight speakers, and the premium Shaker Pro system delivering 550 watts through nine speakers for a richer sound experience.
With these updates, the 2013 Mustang GT Convertible continues to evolve, blending classic muscle car appeal with modern performance, technology, and comfort.
