2013 Ford Mustang GT Revealed Ahead of Los Angeles Auto Show

Just ahead of its official debut at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, Ford has fully revealed the updated 2013 Mustang lineup. The iconic pony car will be offered in four versions: V6, GT, Boss 302, and Shelby GT500. Production will take place at the AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, with sales scheduled to begin in Spring 2012.

For the 2013 model year, the Mustang receives a sharper and more aggressive appearance highlighted by a redesigned front grille, updated hood styling, and new LED signature lighting. Ford also introduces an optional GT Track Package, which adds performance-focused upgrades including an engine oil cooler, larger radiator, high-performance brake pads, and the same Torsen limited-slip differential used in the Boss 302.

Under the hood, the Mustang GT continues to feature Ford’s popular 5.0-liter engine, now producing 420 horsepower — an increase of 8 horsepower over the previous model year.

According to Mustang chief engineer Dave Pericak, the goal for the 2013 update was to build on the strengths of the existing platform while adding refinement and new technology to improve the overall driving experience.

Ford also found a creative way to promote the new Mustang GT. In a playful marketing campaign tied to the 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, the company featured the car alongside a fictional model named Dalena Henriques. Curious readers searching for the model online would instead be directed toward images and coverage of the new Mustang GT itself, making the campaign an unusual but effective attention-grabber.
