2013 Ford Mustang Lineup Debuts With Fresh Styling and Upgraded Features

Ford has officially unveiled the updated 2013 Mustang lineup, bringing refreshed styling, new technology, and performance upgrades to the V6, GT, and Boss 302 models. After recently introducing the powerful 3.7-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 engines, Ford continues to refine its iconic pony car with a sharper appearance and improved equipment.

The biggest visual changes arrive at the front, where every Mustang receives a redesigned fascia with larger lower air intakes and a more aggressive splitter design. Ford says the updated grille gives the car a bolder and more muscular stance. GT models also gain functional hood vents designed to help extract heat from the engine bay for improved cooling.

Performance sees a slight boost as well. The 5.0-liter “Coyote” V8 in the Mustang GT now produces 420 horsepower, benefiting from lessons learned during development of the Boss 302. Buyers can also choose a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, allowing drivers to switch between full automatic operation and manual-style gear control.

Exterior refinements continue with body-colored rocker panels, a gloss-black rear panel between the taillights, and updated lighting throughout the lineup. HID headlights are now standard on V6 and GT trims, while LED accents appear in both the front lighting and signature three-bar taillamps. New wheel designs ranging from 17 to 19 inches are also available.

One of the more unique additions is Ford’s new side-mirror projection system, which shines the Mustang pony logo onto the ground when the doors are unlocked. Recaro sport seats, previously limited to high-performance models, are now optional on both V6 and GT variants.

The Boss 302 also returns for 2013 with retro-inspired updates. A reflective “hockey stick” side stripe pays tribute to the classic 1970 Boss 302, while a new School Bus Yellow paint option honors Parnelli Jones’ legendary Trans-Am race car. The Laguna Seca edition adds Sterling Gray accents for a more distinctive appearance.

Under the hood, the Boss 302 remains unchanged mechanically, delivering 444 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque through a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission. Ford also made the grille-mounted fog lamp covers removable to improve airflow and cooling during track driving.

Ford has not yet announced official pricing, but the updated 2013 Mustang models are expected to arrive in dealerships early next year following their debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
