After weeks of spy shots and teasers, the updated 2013 Ford Mustang has finally been revealed ahead of its debut at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. The refresh brings a sharper design, new features, and a welcome power increase for the Mustang GT.
Visually, the 2013 model adopts a more aggressive front end inspired by the Shelby GT500, complete with a protruding grille, standard projector headlights, and distinctive LED accent bars. The fog lights remain integrated within the upper grille area, while a redesigned lower fascia and front splitter improve both cooling and aerodynamics. The Mustang GT also benefits from updated hood vents to better manage engine heat.
Ford addressed previous styling criticisms by replacing the dark lower body trim with body-colored elements, giving the car a cleaner and more refined look. At the rear, a new black panel frames the updated LED taillights, which retain the classic three-bar Mustang design but now feature a more modern, segmented appearance. Two new exterior colors—Deep Impact Blue and Gotta Have It Green—add extra visual flair. A standout detail is the LED projection system in the side mirrors, which displays the Mustang logo on the ground when unlocking the car.
Inside, the Mustang gains optional leather-trimmed Recaro sport seats similar to those found in higher-performance variants. A new 4.2-inch display in the instrument cluster introduces Track Apps, allowing drivers to monitor performance metrics such as 0–60 times, quarter-mile results, braking distances, and g-forces, complete with drag-style countdown visuals.
Performance upgrades go beyond aesthetics. The 5.0-liter V8 in the Mustang GT now produces 420 horsepower—an increase of 8 horsepower over the previous model. Models equipped with the six-speed automatic transmission also benefit from Ford’s SelectShift feature, giving drivers greater manual control.
For enthusiasts, Ford introduced a new GT Track Package available with the six-speed manual and 3.73 gearing. This package includes an engine oil cooler, upgraded radiator, high-performance brake pads, a Torsen limited-slip differential from the Boss 302, 19-inch wheels with performance tires, and the Brembo brake package with 14-inch vented front rotors.
The V6 model also sees expanded availability of its Performance Package, now offered with automatic transmission, though its power output remains unchanged.
Production of the 2013 Mustang lineup continues at Ford’s Flat Rock, Michigan plant, with the first models arriving in dealerships in spring 2012.
