2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Spotted Testing With Possible Power Upgrades

Earlier this year, reports surfaced suggesting that the upcoming 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 could deliver as much as 620 horsepower. Soon after, the first spy photos of the high-performance Mustang appeared online. Now, a fresh batch of images is fueling even more speculation — including rumors that Ford may be experimenting with turbocharging technology.

One of the biggest clues comes from a noticeably larger intercooler visible behind the front grille. While this could simply support a more powerful supercharged setup, some enthusiasts believe it may hint at a twin-turbocharged configuration requiring additional cooling capacity.

If Ford sticks with its current formula, the next GT500 is expected to use a supercharged 5.8-liter V8 derived from the existing aluminum-block 5.4-liter engine. Regardless of the final setup, it’s clear Ford is aiming directly at the upcoming Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in the ongoing muscle car horsepower battle.

Visually, the new GT500 is expected to remain close to the current model, retaining its aggressive styling, rear-wheel-drive layout, and solid rear axle configuration. Suspension and performance upgrades are also likely to carry over with refinements, while the cabin could receive improved materials and additional technology features as Ford continues to modernize the Mustang lineup.

For now, details remain limited, and enthusiasts will have to wait for official confirmation from Ford. Still, if the next Shelby GT500 improves upon the already potent current model, it could become one of the most formidable muscle cars on the road.
