Ford officially introduced the 2013 Shelby GT500 Convertible as part of SVT’s 20th anniversary celebration, bringing open-top driving together with extreme performance. Following the coupe revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the convertible version arrives with the same supercharged 5.8-liter V8 engine producing an incredible 650 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque.
While the coupe is capable of exceeding 200 mph, the convertible’s top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph for added stability and safety. Even so, the GT500 Convertible remains one of the most powerful production drop-tops of its time.
Performance upgrades include available Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers, Brembo braking hardware, and an optional Track Package that adds enhanced cooling systems for the engine, transmission, and differential. Ford says the updated chassis tuning and suspension setup helped the new convertible lap Sebring International Raceway nearly 3.5 seconds quicker than the previous model.
Drivers can switch between Normal and Sport suspension settings at the push of a button, allowing the car to balance everyday comfort with aggressive track capability. Larger brakes, six-piston front calipers, and revised brake pads also improve stopping performance and driver confidence.
The debut also marks two decades of Ford’s Special Vehicle Team, which has produced more than 210,000 high-performance vehicles since 1993. To commemorate the anniversary, the 2013 GT500 features unique illuminated sill plates celebrating SVT’s legacy.
Beyond the massive power increase, Ford upgraded nearly every major drivetrain component in the new GT500, including the supercharger, clutch, transmission, driveshaft, and rear axle. The result is a more refined and better-balanced muscle car that delivers both brutal acceleration and improved track handling.
Production of the 2013 Shelby GT500 was scheduled to take place at Ford’s Flat Rock, Michigan assembly plant.
