Ford has officially revealed the 2013 Shelby GT500, introducing a new high-performance V8 engine ahead of the car’s debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. At the heart of the updated muscle car is a supercharged 5.8-liter V8 delivering an incredible 650 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque, making it one of the most powerful production V8 engines ever offered by Ford.
Designed by Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT), the new GT500 combines massive power with a range of performance upgrades aimed at improving speed, handling, and overall drivability. The car is capable of exceeding 200 mph, thanks in part to its aerodynamic improvements, six-speed manual transmission, and relatively lightweight 3,850-pound construction.
A major contributor to the GT500’s performance is its upgraded supercharger, which is both larger and more efficient than the previous setup. Ford also developed an improved cooling system to help manage the heat generated by the high-output 5.8-liter engine during aggressive driving.
To maximize traction and launch performance, the GT500 now features an advanced launch control system that adjusts based on road conditions and temperature. High-performance Brembo brakes come standard, while buyers can further enhance handling with an optional package that adds SVT-tuned Bilstein electronic adjustable dampers.
The 2013 Shelby GT500 is expected to become one of the headline attractions at the Los Angeles Auto Show, where it will face off against rivals like the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in the ongoing muscle car horsepower battle.
