2013 Shelby 1000: A 1,200-HP Extreme Mustang

Claiming the title of one of the most powerful street-legal muscle cars ever built, the 1,200-horsepower 2013 Shelby 1000 made a striking appearance at the New York International Auto Show.

Developed by Shelby American, a division of Carroll Shelby International, the model follows the 2012 Shelby 1000, which celebrated the company’s 50th anniversary. This updated version is based on the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, but nearly doubles its output with an astonishing 1,200 horsepower.

At its core is the same supercharged 5.8-liter V8 found in the GT500, though extensively upgraded to handle the massive increase in power. Enhancements include a Shelby/Ford Racing 4.0-liter supercharger, reinforced internal components such as upgraded bearings, camshafts, titanium retainers, and fuel injectors, along with an aluminum driveshaft, improved water pump, Borla headers, and a full cat-back exhaust system.

To match the extreme performance, the car receives significant chassis upgrades, including a revised rear suspension setup and a high-performance Wilwood braking system with six-piston front calipers and four-piston units at the rear.

Visually, the Shelby 1000 stands out with its wide-body design, custom fiberglass hood, reflective side graphics, and three-piece 20-inch wheels available in matte black or natural aluminum finishes. Inside, performance-focused touches include an MGW short-throw shifter and a bespoke interior upgrade.

The base 2013 Shelby GT500 started at $54,650, while the Shelby 1000 conversion added another $154,995. The package also included extras like a custom car cover and delivery through the Shelby Museum.

Production was strictly limited to just 100 units, with each car individually built, numbered, and recorded in the official Shelby Registry, making it a highly exclusive and collectible piece of American performance engineering.
